The Winston is semi-private 18-hole golf course just minutes from downtown Calgary.
The Winston’s mission statement includes: “contributing to our community by supporting children and families in need… and becoming environmental stewards for our facilities and surrounding area.”
The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat and protect natural resources.
The Winston Club has achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary”. It is one of 19 golf courses in Alberta and 896 in the world to hold this title.
“The (Winston Club) has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property,”
“To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas.”
Tara Donadio, Director of Cooperative Sanctuary Programs at Audubon International.
As of December 2015, the Winston Club achieved certification in all six of the required categories:
- Environmental Planning
- Wildlife & Habitat Management
- Outreach and Education
- Chemical Use Reduction and Safety
- Water Conservation
- Water Quality Management.
